Crashing the Vogues And Vice Versa?!

After a two week delay in writing I just have to write a few lines, if not for else, just to let you know that I am still alive! Last week went by so quickly, that I simply haven’t had the time nor the energy to update my blog. Anyways, enough of the explanations.

Last week I entered a concert at Ancienne Belgique to listen to an American band called Iron & Wine on Wednesday. One of the Danes invited me. The band and the concert was nice and I got home early enough, so I could get enough of sleep to manage the next work day.

Iron & Wine at Ancienne Belgique

On Thursday all of the interns at the office got an invitation to attend a dinner with other interns from the regional offices in the house where our office is also located. We went to a Moroccan restaurant nearby, after visiting a trashy Bulgarian bar called “Pacific”. It indeed was in the atmosphere of the Pacific, krhmm? Not! Well, they had red walls, ‘Happy New Year 2011’ hanging on the wall and Merry Christmas written on the window and a poster with a stripper on it, as in marketing the program for next Friday in the club. But the beer was cheap (less than 2 euros). The interns, with whom we went to the Moroccan restaurant, represented Sweden and Denmark, and the
language spoken around the table varied from Swedish and Danish to English. Even the waiter, for the surprise of all of us, spoke Swedish of all languages! I mean, he didn’t speak that much English, but Arabic, French and fluent Swedish … ! I had a Tajine Tassin (if I remember the name correctly).

On Friday we went again to Place Luxembourg to network and on Saturday we had some cheese and wine at home. We were ought to go to an old church that was reconstructed as a nightclub, but we never got so far. On Sunday I had the usual walk-around in town, and got to know Louise and St. Gilles, where I visited a nice old church. I love the architecture here, by the way. Not necessarily in the EU-quarter but elsewhere in many places.

This week has been full of program as well. It feels like you don’t have your own time that much to collect your thoughts fully, unless you call cooking and cleaning part of having your own personal time and space. The days go by so quickly and after work you are quite tired and simply reflecting over all that you have experienced and learned during the day.

Yesterday two of the Danish girls, who live in the same house as I do, invited me to go with them to a café for some cheese and beer. It was very nice and the girls were wonderful.

Today it has been snowing a tiny bit, for the first time while I have been here. Well, it doesn’t matter, it still isn’t as cold as in Finland at the moment (-25-30?C).

After work I went to meet up with the intern with whom I cooperated back in 2006 (the one I wrote about earlier on). It was great to see her again - she has a great sense of humour and we understand each other. We had agreed to meet in Fat Boys at Place Luxembourg at 5.30pm after work. I came a few minutes earlier and ordered a beer. Since it after all is an American sports pub, there are screens from where people can watch sports. I asked the bartender whether he knew if there was any handball coming up soon. While he was searching for some information a Belgian guy started to talk to me about handball, since he had overheard our conversation. The amazing thing is that he looked and he was by his manner completely the same as a Finnish singer that I know. Can you guess who from the following?! The guy that I met In Fat Boys - he is a lawyer by profession, and works as such fulltime, but in his spare time he sings in a Belgian band called
The Vogues. He told that the band had played across Europe and functioned as a “warm-up” –band to the Swedish band called Mando Diao (which btw, is a very good band!!). So I’m sure of that I met the Essence Twin of the lead singer of the Finnish band called The Crash. Wow!
